Discover Albertville Tavern

Walking into Albertville Tavern feels like stepping into a place where time slows down just enough to enjoy good food and easy conversation. Tucked along 8114 35th St, Colfax, WI 54730, United States, this local tavern has built a reputation that stretches well beyond its rural setting. I first stopped in on a chilly Friday evening after a long drive through Dunn County, and within minutes it was clear why neighbors keep coming back.

The menu leans into classic tavern comfort food, and that’s where it shines. Burgers arrive hot and juicy, with a griddle-seared crust that tells you they’re cooked to order, not rushed. The Friday fish fry is a standout and mirrors what many Wisconsin food writers call a regional staple, lightly battered and fried until crisp without being greasy. According to guidance from the USDA, properly fried fish should reach an internal temperature of 145°F, and the kitchen here clearly respects those standards. You taste it in the clean flavor and consistent texture.

What makes this place memorable isn’t just the food, though. It’s the process behind it. The cooks follow a simple method that works: limited menu, fresh ingredients, and repeatable techniques. A bartender once explained how they prep on busy nights by par-cooking certain items so orders stay fast without sacrificing quality. That approach aligns with best practices shared by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, which often emphasizes consistency over complexity for small-town diners.

Over the years, I’ve watched how Albertville Tavern adapts without losing its identity. During peak hunting season, the dining room fills with orange vests and stories from the woods. On summer weekends, families stop in after softball games. Reviews from regulars often mention the same things I noticed-friendly service, generous portions, and prices that feel fair. One online review described the atmosphere as friendly small-town vibe, and that phrase sticks because it’s accurate without being flashy.

The staff deserves real credit. Servers tend to know customers by name, and even first-timers are treated like they’ve been coming in for years. From an experience standpoint, that kind of service builds trust fast. Hospitality research published by Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration shows that personal interaction is one of the strongest predictors of repeat visits, especially in independent restaurants. You can see that play out here every night.

Location matters too. Being just outside Colfax makes the tavern an easy stop for locals and travelers alike. There’s ample parking, clear signage, and a relaxed pace that fits the surrounding farmland. While the menu doesn’t chase trends, it covers the essentials well-sandwiches, fried favorites, cold drinks, and rotating specials that keep things interesting.

There are limits worth noting. If you’re looking for a large vegetarian menu or late-night fine dining, this probably isn’t your spot. The kitchen keeps things focused, and hours can vary seasonally. Still, that honesty is part of what makes the place dependable. You know what you’re getting, and it’s done right.

From personal visits to countless conversations with locals, Albertville Tavern stands as an example of how a small diner can earn loyalty through consistency, care, and community connection. The food satisfies, the service feels genuine, and the overall experience reflects the values that have kept Wisconsin taverns relevant for generations.

  • Very quick service on a Friday night. Six delicious pieces of fish, salad, and choice of potato for $10.95. Burger was great and kids meals with huge portions for $5.25.

  • Great country bar with exceptional food! We go on Saturday nights for ribs, and prime rib, but they also have great burgers that don't disappoint.

  • My husband ordered the walleye and I ordered the poor man’s lobster - which came with a relish tray and dinner rolls. Both meals were absolutely delicious (especially the poor man’s lobster)! Brandi was our bartender and was very personable and attentive. For two meals and five drinks, our bill came out to $59 which I think was very reasonable for the quality of food and service we received. We went around 7:00 on a Friday and were able to enjoy a couple drinks and dinner and the wait for our food was probably only about 30 minutes (just enough time to have one drink before our food arrived). We’re already looking forward to visiting again!

  • The prime rib here is still the best I have tasted. The flavor is phenomenal. Service is always great. A little drive from Eau Claire, but well worth it! If you ever watch Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives I always thought this place should make the show! New owners steak is still Great. Well done!

  • Nice rural bar/restaurant. Have been there a handful of times. Dining room or bar area tables. Good food and drinks. Recommend reservations for Saturday night prime rib.
